WG Grace fields for the opponent

The Grace clan hated losing in cricket, and none less than WG. He wanted to push for victories, not a very common trait in the era he played. Playing against Sussex at Bristol, however, he really had to push things; so, in the absence of KS Ranjitsinhji, Grace himself graced the field (if you mind the pun) as substitute. Cobden’s match: Oxford vs Cambridge, 1870

June 28, 1870. William Yardley scored the first hundred in the history of Oxford vs Cambridge matches, but the target for Oxford was a mere 179. Oxford were cruising along at 72 for 1, and later, at 153 for 3. Then, at one stage, they needed 4 runs with 4 wickets in hand.
