I remember first reading about this name in 2003. There was a mention in an article in Wisden Asia. I thought it was the former England off-spinner David Allen.

Then, a few years later ( still no internet for me), the first taste of a Wisden and there was this name again. Cricketana by David Rayvern Allen. He wrote that for many years. Probably longer than his hero John Arlott's tenure as the book reviewer.

In 1959, he got two offers. One was that of a pianist for a cruise of the Caribbean. The other was that of a music arranger for BBC television shows. He chose the latter. He remained there for 35 years.

Wrote many books on cricket. Notably, award winning books on his idol John Arlott and Jim Swanton.
Arlott himself tried to write about his own life. His son Tim tried as well. But no one knew Arlott better than Allen. It resulted in one of the finest cricket biographies.

It was he who suggested the formation of a MCC audio archive. He himself produced all the initial content in the form of interviews with former cricket people.

A very good researcher who produced some scholarly cricket history works.

Almost unknown trivia: his real name was Leonard Allen. He was once saw 'Rayvern' in a shop. Probably the name of a Heater or a cooker. He inserted that as his middle name and changed the first name!

David Rayvern Allen was born on Febraury 5, 1938
